Film Thickness Measuring System

The Film Thickness Measuring System (FTS) is a calibration-free measurement system built by DJH Designs for accurate, repeatable paint layer testing. It gives a streamlined process for measuring, documenting, and processing paint samples — eliminating operator error and bias while delivering consistent results across machines, sites, and operators. Films up to 300 microns (12 mil) can be read with an optional bit, with primer and top coat measured simultaneously via a full 360° layer analysis. An active calibration system with automatic magnification adjustment means no manual recalibration is needed when moving between different substrate materials, so the system stays accurate from one job to the next.

Results are managed through DJH View Software, which uses multi-point averaging and live color imaging to align samples precisely and produce layer-by-layer readings with digital markers for clear documentation. The FTS is ASTM D5796 compliant and CE certified, and its solvent-free, low-maintenance design makes it a practical fit for paint manufacturers, coil coating operations, construction and steel fabrication, and automotive production environments. Measurements can be reported in inches, millimeters, microns, mils, or x10 factor, and the system can be expanded beyond thickness measurement to support broader coating defect inspection and paint inventory management.
