Wet Film Measurement (WFM™)

The WFM™ system from DJH Designs is the only online instrument that measures wet film thickness on the coater roll and the strip before the coating ever reaches the oven. Using advanced coating model algorithms, it accounts for paint transfer efficiency, bearing compensation, and roll ribbing effects to deliver an accurate wet film reading — and to predict dry film thickness on the strip before painting even begins, so out-of-specification product can be caught and corrected at the source.

Because measurement happens before the coating is applied, the WFM eliminates the waste that typically comes from the first meters of coil running out of specification while operators dial in the coater, and it prevents wet film wheel track marks from forming at coil start. A confocal sensor with automated wipers detects film builds as low as 1μm directly from the actual surface position, so no calibration is required, and the fully automated system runs continuously without operator intervention.

✓
Measures Wet Film Before Painting — the only system reading wet film thickness on the coater roll and strip before the coating is applied.
✓
Predicts Dry Film Thickness Pre-Application — forecasts DFT on the strip before painting starts, using advanced coating model algorithms.
✓
Detects Film Builds as Low as 1μm — a high-sensitivity confocal sensor catches even the smallest thickness variations.
✓
Eliminates Out-of-Spec First Meters — catches specification issues before they reach the strip, cutting waste at coil start.
✓
Prevents Wheel Track Marks at Coil Start — avoids the wet film marking that commonly occurs at the beginning of a coil run.
✓
Fully Automated, No Calibration Needed — measures actual surface position directly, running continuously without operator recalibration.
