Scrape & Intercoat Adhesion Tester

The Scrape and Intercoat Tester can be used either as an in-line production inspection tool or as a development test for evaluating paint, substrate, and process systems to help ensure consistent quality.

Conventional in-line adhesion testing methods often fail to measure the shear bond strength between coating layers. If weak interlayer bonding is present, it can lead to performance issues during a customer’s manufacturing process. In many cases, scrape testing has been restricted to simple coin tests or laboratory instruments that are not rugged enough for continuous production environments.

Shear bond strength is also important in the relationship between the substrate and the coating itself. Standard flexibility and adhesion evaluations may still show acceptable results, yet under shear stress conditions the coating can separate directly from the substrate surface.

  • The typical online adhesion tests have not tested for shear bond strength between layers. When a weak bond exists, there is potential for failure in a customer’s process.
  • Scrape tests have been limited to coin tests or lab equipment not durable enough for online conditions.
  • Shear bond strength is applicable to substrate/paint as well.
  • Normal flexibility and adhesion checks may be acceptable, but when the product is exposed to shear stress, the paint may be directly removed from the substrate.
